You have a folder of downloaded videos, a few MKV rips, and a stray subtitle file that came in a separate ZIP. The built-in player on your machine opens some of them, chokes on others, and refuses to load the subtitles unless you rename them exactly right. Codec packs used to be the answer. Nobody wants to install a codec pack anymore.
That frustration is why a lot of people end up looking outside the usual desktop video software. Mobile players have quietly gotten very good at handling messy file collections, partly because phones deal with whatever gets sideloaded onto them.

It supports hardware acceleration, and the HW+ decoder extends that acceleration to a wider set of videos than standard hardware decoding covers on its own. It was also the first Android video player to support multi-core decoding, and the developers’ own testing put dual-core devices up to 70 percent ahead of single-core ones on playback performance.
That matters more than it sounds. A file that plays back with hardware decode instead of software fallback drops fewer frames, and the machine isn’t spinning its fans through a two-hour movie.
Subtitles you can adjust without pausing
This is where MX Player pulls ahead of most casual players. Subtitles aren’t just supported, they’re adjustable while the video is running, through gestures rather than buried menus.
- Scroll forward or backward to jump to the next or previous subtitle line
- Swipe up or down to reposition the text vertically on screen
- Pinch to zoom in or out to change subtitle text size on the fly

Bringing MX Player to Windows
The app was written for Android, so running it on Windows means running an Android environment on top of Windows. That’s what an emulator does: it creates a virtual Android device inside a desktop window, complete with its own storage and app store access.
People who want to download MX Player for PC usually come at it from one of two directions. Either they already use it on a phone and want the same subtitle behavior on a bigger screen, or they’ve hit the limits of whatever desktop player came with their system.
Wiring the emulator to your video folder
The general process is consistent across emulator products, so the steps below apply broadly rather than to any one of them.
- Install an Android emulator that matches your Windows version and enable virtualization in BIOS if the installer flags it
- Sign in to a Google account inside the emulator so the Play Store is usable
- Search the store for MX Player and install it the way you would on a phone
- Point the emulator’s shared folder setting at the Windows directory holding your videos
- Open the app and browse to that folder from inside the emulated file system
The shared folder step is the one people skip. Without it, the emulator can’t see your Windows drive, and the app shows an empty library.

When the emulator detour is worth it
Some people won’t need any of this. If your videos are standard MP4s with burned-in subtitles, a native desktop player handles them with less setup and no emulator in the way.
Where it earns its keep is the subtitle file that’s running a half second off, the MKV that Windows Media Player refuses to open, or the Kids Lock keeping a toddler out of the rest of the desktop. That’s a narrower case than most desktop software promises, but for files that don’t play nice anywhere else, it’s the same gesture-based fix that already works on a phone screen.
